"He was our greatest inspiration, and we miss him very much."
  - Eric Raymond

Solar Flight is an ongoing effort by champion glider pilot Eric Raymond. After designing and building his own gliders, he was invited to fly the two fastest pedal powered aircraft; AeroVironment's Bionic Bat and Gunther Rochelt's Musculair II. More information about Rochelt's many projects can be found at solair.de.

The Musculair II was groundbreaking in its simplicity and to this day remains the fastest human powered aircraft ever built. Eric Raymond realized that with solar panels on the wings, more than ten times more power would be available. With encouragement from Klaus Savier and Gunther Rochelt, Eric developed his concept for a solar powered airplane. Prior designs had large wings, to collect large amounts of electricity. Eric wanted a faster aircraft, so he designed smaller, more efficient wings, and relied on batteries that would charge up from the solar panels to provide enough power for take off. Once up, the solar panels were intended to provide sufficient power for level flight. Between 1986 and 1990 he built a technology demonstrator, named the Sunseeker. During August 1990, he flew it from California to North Carolina in 21 days.

Solar Flight's mission is to demonstrate that aircraft can be propelled by electric power, and to develop them into practical vehicles. Raymond's dream is to one day fly around the world by solar power in order to bring attention to what is possible for the future if we apply the technology that is available today.
